KATE BERGSTROM
director + artistic director + culture shaper
Lye
Lye is a two-woman project by Jamie Corbett and Kate Bergstrom exploring the intersections of extended piano and vocal technique, sparse character-based poetry, and shimmering electronic aesthetics to create live portraits of femininity, longing, and feelings of place in the wake of suicide and healing from loss.
Lye explores the deep registers of our voices with compliments in piano and harp accompaniment based in neo-Riemannian theory. Neo-Riemannian theory, here used as a compositional rather than analytic tool, reflects subtle changes between triads rather than traditional diatonic harmonic changes, which better represents in music the variations in emotion that follow loss rather than the harmonic narratives created by tonic-dominant relationships.
